PCOM General Surgery Residents have access to a wide range of simulators and training models in the state-of-the-art Simmy Ginsburg Robotic Simulation Suite. These simulators include a robotic "trauma man" named STAN, laparoscopic box trainers, central venous catheter models, intubation models, colonoscopy & endoscopy video trainers and the LAP Mentor, a laparoscopic video trainer that allows residents to practice basic laparoscopic skills as well as perform full operations, complete with unexpected complications and anatomic variations.
New to the Simulation Suite is the ANGIO Mentor, an endovascular trainer which allows residents to practice cardiac catheterizations, peripheral vascular stenting, vascular angioplasty, carotid stenting and endovascular aortic procedures. This simulator allows the resident to select from a the same brand of catheters and wires used in current practice.
The efficacy of these training models has been demonstrated in several recently published studies. Junior level residents are required to log a certain number of hours in the Simulation Suite using the various models and must demonstrate proficiency and improvement throughout their training.
