The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine offers a top notch osteopathic general surgery residency program based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The program is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and is the largest osteopathic general surgery residency program in the country.
The 5-year general surgery residency accepts 6 residents per year into categorical PGY1 positions for a total of 30 residents in the PGY1 through PGY5 years. The first year of the PCOM program satisfies all of the requirements of an AOA-approved internship. Upon completion of the program residents will be eligible for board certification in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
At PCOM the residents recieve an excellent academic and operative experience with senior level residents performing approximately 250 major operations annually. The program has developed based on the Consortium model of education and during the five-year training period residents will spend time rotating through a total of 11 hospitals. PCOM residents will spend approximately 85% of their time among the 3 main hospital affiliates: Aria Health, Crozer-Keystone Health System and The Reading Hospital & Medical Center. Several other hospitals offer additional training in subspecialty areas such as cardiothoracic surgery, vascular & endovascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care & trauma surgery and surgical oncology.
The majority of PCOM General Surgery Residency Program graduates go on to pursue additional training in surgical subspecialty fellowship programs. Recent graduates have obtained fellowships in plastic & reconstructive surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery and surgical critical care & trauma surgery.
